Four women were chosen by the Urban League’s Academy of Leaders selection committee for their contributions to the fields of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Honorees are:

  • Diane Miller-Dawson, Director of Finance, The City of Akron

“These four women represent the very best Akron has to offer. Combined, they hold more than 70 years of experience in what are typically male dominated fields. We want to honor them for their expertise and contributions to the community and highlight them as role models for the next generation of aspiring engineers, accountants and medical professionals,” says Urban League President and CEO, Dr. Sadie M. Winlock.

The 92nd Annual Gala will serve as the Urban League’s kickoff to the agency’s 2017-2018 fundraising cycle and new strategic direction, which will focus on education and employment, primarily in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

“Since our inception in 1925, the Urban League has always prepared individuals, primarily African Americans, for careers in in-demand industries. In 1925, it was the rubber industry. Today, those jobs are in the STEM industries. As we move into the latter half of 2017 and into 2018, all of our programs and services will be centered around empowering individuals through employment and education, with a focus on the STEM sector,” says Winlock.

The 92nd Gala and Academy of Leaders Induction is hosted by honorary event chair, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and will feature entertainment by the world famous Motown Record’s The Temptations. Reservations can be made at akronurbanleague.org/gala. Cost is $125 per person or $1,250 per table of eight.
