At this year’s event, we will award over 40 scholarships to area high school seniors – including multiple full tuition awards. We will also honor two community members for their exemplary contributions to the Greater Akron Community. Following the awards ceremony, we will report on our 2016 progress and recognize our incoming and outgoing Board of Directors.
Bernett L. Williams, Vice President of External Affairs at Akron Children’s Hospital, will receive the Akron Urban League’s President’s Leadership Award. Williams, a well-respected and dedicated leader in the community, was the former President and CEO of the Akron Urban League and is widely recognized for her role in restoring the professional and financial standing of the agency during her tenure. In her current role, Williams is responsible for leading Akron Children’s Hospital’s community partnerships, collaborations, government relations and community benefit strategies.
Officer Lloyd Ford of the Akron Police Department will be presented the agency’s Community Service Award for his 32 plus years of service to the Akron community. Ford, an Akron native, is one of five officers in the department’s community relations unit which is tasked with building relationships of trust between the City of Akron Police Department and the City’s African-American community. Active in the community and a regular at the Akron Urban League, Ford’s relationship building through respect, kindness and compassion is an invaluable service to the Greater Akron region.
