Backpack + Vax Event
The Backpack + Vax Event was hugely successful on Friday, August 5, at the Akron Urban League. The goal was to equip local students with supplies to start the school year. This included backpacks filled with a folder, notebook, crayons, ruler and an AUL pencil pouch packed with goodies! Children, K-8, also enjoyed free haircuts, manicures, vaccinations/boosters, and more!
The registration line moved quickly as staff and volunteers from the Akron Urban League, and The Light Center Recovery ushered the parents and children in to pick up their backpacks. After selecting the color of their choice, they were treated to lunch, ice cream, a game truck, a 360 photobooth, manicures, and haircuts.
Parents and children alike enjoyed the afternoon. “The smiling faces are always the icing on the cake,” Brandi Davis, Director of Education, Akron Urban League, said. “This is an opportunity for us to support education and prepare them for school. Not only did the kids have a great time, but we vaccinated and boosted 15 people and registered eight people to vote. We consider that a monumental win for our event!”
“The event was a great success; we hope to replicate it next year. Everyone had a wonderful time, including local celebrity host Romeo Travis. The DJ set the vibe, and a good time was had by all,” said Alissa Shively, Director of Marketing and Communications, Akron Urban League.
Of the almost 600 backpacks, only 20 were left at the end of the event. Those backpacks were donated to our trusted partners at the Akron Zoo for their backpack giveaway.
Thank you to our partners at The Light Center Recovery, vendors, volunteers and staff for making this event a monumental success!
