STEAM Academy After School Program
The mission of the STEAM Academy After School Program is to develop the interest and skills of children in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The program seeks to increase each student’s performance in science and math, using art and technology.
Students in 3rd – 5th grade at Helen Arnold Community Center that are struggling in science and math, scored below their grade level benchmark on their Summit Education Initiative Benchmark test scores and whose families meet the criteria (low income, receiving TANF, etc.) will qualify for the program.
Pilot program Success
The Akron Urban League piloted a STEAM program for 7 weeks during the summer of 2017. The focus was on science and math, with art being the basis for learning. Using a STEM NASA curriculum, the measurable outcomes provided were the most significant in math with a 71% accumulative improvement for the 10 targeted students. The improvement ranged from 0 to 105%, based on pre and post-test scores.
