Health Equity

Advancing Health Equity. Empowering Healthier Communities.

At the Akron Urban League, we believe everyone deserves a fair and just opportunity to achieve their highest level of health and well being.

Health equity means ensuring that all individuals, regardless of race, income, neighborhood, education, or background, have access to the resources, opportunities, and support needed to live healthy lives. We recognize that health is influenced by more than medical care alone. Factors such as housing, employment, education, transportation, nutrition, and community safety all play a critical role in determining health outcomes.

For more than 100 years, the Akron Urban League has worked to address barriers that disproportionately impact underserved communities by creating pathways to economic self reliance, social empowerment, and improved quality of life.

Our Commitment

The Akron Urban League is committed to advancing health equity by connecting individuals and families to resources, education, workforce opportunities, and community partnerships that support overall wellness.

Through strategic collaborations with healthcare providers, community organizations, employers, and public agencies, we work to:

  • Increase access to health education and preventive care
  • Address social determinants of health
  • Support workforce pathways in healthcare careers
  • Promote mental, physical, and emotional well-being
  • Reduce disparities impacting African American and underserved communities
  • Advocate for healthier and more equitable communities

Community Health Education

Through workshops, health fairs, wellness events, and community partnerships, we provide access to information and resources that empower residents to make informed health decisions.
Past initiatives have included health screenings, vaccine education, fitness activities, self defense instruction, meditation, mental wellness programming, and community wellness events.

Strategic Health Partnerships

The Akron Urban League collaborates with healthcare institutions, public health agencies, and community organizations to increase access to services and improve health outcomes across Summit County.
These partnerships help connect residents to health resources, workforce readiness opportunities, preventive care initiatives, and community support services.

Why Health Equity Matters

Health disparities continue to affect many communities across the nation. Research shows that social and economic conditions significantly influence life expectancy, chronic disease rates, access to care, and overall quality of life.
Advancing health equity means removing barriers that prevent individuals and families from reaching their full potential. By investing in education, workforce development, economic mobility, and community wellness, we help create healthier futures for generations to come.
