Young Adult Council
The Akron Urban League Young Adult Council was established in the summer of 2022 in response to the tragic killing of Jayland Walker and the subsequent call from the U.S. Department of Justice to hear directly from Akron's young adults. Recognizing that the voices of individuals ages 16 to 26 are often overlooked in community decision-making, the Akron Urban League created the Council to provide a platform for meaningful engagement, dialogue, and action.
The Young Adult Council empowers young people to become changemakers by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to address critical issues affecting their community. Participants explore key topics including police accountability, police use of force, education, mental health, community relations, and civic engagement.
Through guided discussions, leadership development, and collaboration with local organizations, Council members learn to think critically, solve problems, and advocate for positive change. The initiative emphasizes creating lasting seats at decision-making tables, ensuring that young adults are not only heard but actively involved in shaping the future of Akron.
By fostering leadership, community advocacy, and civic participation, the Young Adult Council is helping build a stronger, more inclusive Akron where young voices play a vital role in driving progress and creating solutions for future generations.
