The Akron Urban League (AUL) is calling on the Ohio Redistricting Commission to keep Summit County within a single congressional district, warning that dividing the county would weaken its influence in Washington and dilute the voices of its diverse communities.
“Summit County has benefited from one congressional voice advocating for our shared interests,” says John M. Williams, President and CEO of the AUL. “Splitting the county would reduce our ability to secure federal resources and address the complex challenges of both urban and suburban residents, adds Williams.”
Home to more than 538,000 people, Summit is Ohio’s fourth most populous county – behind Franklin, Cuyahoga, and Hamilton counties; and one of its most diverse. The Urban League stressed that unity ensures stronger representation for families, especially those facing economic hardship.
“This is about more than lines on a map—it’s about preserving the voice of more than half a million Ohioans,” concludes Williams. The AUL urges residents, civic groups, and leaders to speak out, contact legislators, and testify at commission hearings to keep Summit County intact.
We hope government officials prioritize the voice of the people.
